Edge City Monthly #5 — August 2024
Countdown to Edge City Lanna; Save the Date for Edge Esmeralda 2025! ☀️
August 27, 2024
Hello friends! Timour here with another monthly update for Edge City ☀️ I hope you are having a great day.
Our next popup village, Edge City Lanna, is coming up, and we can’t wait. It is going to be an incredible month (Oct 10 — Nov 10) in beautiful Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Please apply here and share the welcome letter with friends who you think will resonate with Edge City. As always, it’ll be full of curious, kind, and high-agency folks who are ambitious about building the future.
Remind me, what is Edge City?
Edge City creates popup villages around the world that convene people working at the frontiers of tech, science, and society.
Our mission is to act as a ‘culture and society incubator’—a living lab where new ideas, technologies, cultures, and organizations are tested and scaled, all with the goal of advancing human flourishing.
We aim to partner with folks who are building new cities and permanent living environments or reimagining old towns, so please reach out if you are working on something relevant!
Calls to action
- Edge City Lanna: Apply to attend Edge City Lanna. If you are accepted, buy your ticket and accommodation as soon as possible before the prices rise!
- Share: Share Lanna with friends (even if you can’t make it) by sending the site and the application. We’ve seen amazing stories and outcomes (new companies, relationships, etc.) come from what happens downstream of a single invite.
- Telegram and Twitter: Join our Telegram updates channel and follow us on Twitter to stay in the loop :)
Edge City Lanna
We’ve shared a lot of updates about Lanna on our blog! Here’s a quick summary:
- Ticketing: TLDR: We encourage longer stays, we have discounts available for builders and scholars, and you should book soon!
- Accommodation: We’ve made it super easy with a list of recommended hotels, and there are a ton of Airbnbs nearby.
- Map: We’ve released the map of Edge City Lanna and explain more about what a day and a week in the life of an Edge City Lanna resident will look like.
Save the date: Edge Esmeralda 2025
We shared a save-the-date for Edge Esmeralda 2025, which will take place May 24 — June 21, 2024 in Healdsburg, CA.
It will be another month-long gathering for people who believe the future can be better and are actively working to make it happen. Stay tuned for more details.
We strongly encourage attending for longer rather than shorter. People who attended EE’24 for the whole month ended up having the best experience, and people who only attended for just a day or two said they felt like they missed out on the full EE experience.
In the meantime, re-live the highlights from EE’24 with the recap website! Explore our programming tracks, view photos from the month, and dive into the key stats that made 2024’s popup village so special.

RadicalxChange — Edges: a Plural Money Experiment
The folks at RadicalxChange tested a community currency called "∈dges" at Edge Esmeralda. This article explains how they set up the system, what worked, what didn't, and how it might be used in the future. Sneak peak: we’ll be running a more fleshed-out experiment at Edge City Lanna!
Toby Shorin — Concept Clinic: Results From Our First Experiment
Toby writes about the program he ran at Edge Esmeralda, the Concept Clinic. He talks about the different types of help they offer, like coaching and group sessions. Imbuing our community with health and wellness is a big priority, and we’re so grateful that Toby led this initiative. This will be another program that will see further development in Thailand during Edge City Lanna.
Vitalik Buterin — Plurality philosophy in an incredibly oversized nutshell
Vitalik breaks down the main ideas from Glen Weyl and Audrey Tang's book, Plurality. He explains how it's different from other ways of thinking about society and government and talks about how these ideas could be used in real life and how they fit with new technology. We’re aligned with the philosophy behind Plurality, and are excited to continue to make spaces for experimentation with practical approaches to these ideas.
As always, thank you for reading, and see you soon ☀️
