Field Days & Site Visits
Our field days took us directly to the projects and communities where innovation is happening on the ground:
Fibertime: In Kayamandi township, we saw how this team is laying internet infrastructure to bring affordable, educational, and economic opportunities to communities that would otherwise lack access.
Apex School: This innovative education model is tackling South Africa's education challenges head-on. With technology enabling self-guided learning where every student has computer access and teachers available 24/7, Apex is creating high-quality educational opportunities for children who might otherwise be left behind.
Immobazyme: This biotech lab in Stellenbosch is revolutionizing sustainable manufacturing through precision fermentation, developing scalable approaches to ingredient production across industries from food to pharmaceuticals.
The Bridge Stellenbosch: A systems-scale smart city demonstrating a holistic approach to reimagined living spaces. By leveraging land and location, they're building an innovation environment uniquely suited for growth, sustainability, and high-quality life.
Bitcoin Ekasi: In Mossel Bay, we witnessed a circular Bitcoin economy empowering a township community. What began as a financial experiment has grown into an ecosystem blending financial empowerment, surf culture, and youth education.

University Connections
We explored two of South Africa's leading academic centers – University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University – each cultivating unique innovation ecosystems.
At the University of Cape Town, we visited the UTC Fintech Hub, offering the first and largest Fintech degree in South Africa, where we shared the Edge City vision and connected with students developing innovative fintech solutions.
At Stellenbosch University's Launch Lab Pitch Day, student founders impressed us with presentations ranging from South Africa's first humanoid robotics company to at-home microbiome testing kits. The quality and ambition of these pitches demonstrated the depth and potential of entrepreneurial talent developing within South African universities.
These university connections highlighted the critical role that academic institutions play in fostering innovation ecosystems, particularly in emerging markets.

Community Adventures & Experiences
Table Mountain: The challenging 8 kilometer hike with over 2,300 feet of elevation gain tested everyone's endurance, but rewarded us with breathtaking views of one of the world's most biodiverse regions.

Penguins at Boulder Beach: We took a Sunday field trip to Boulders Beach to visit the famous South African penguin colony, driving back along the stunning Chapman's Peak coastal route – widely considered one of the most scenic drives in the world.
Babylonstoren & Boschendal Farm: These historic estates demonstrated how thoughtful infrastructure and experience design can harmonize with natural landscapes to create spaces of beauty and connection. The careful integration of gardens, architecture, and functional spaces provided inspiration for how built environments can enhance, rather than compete with nature.
First Thursday Art Walk: Our group explored downtown Cape Town's vibrant art scene during the monthly First Thursday event, visiting galleries and museums while experiencing the city's creative energy firsthand.
Family Braai: We hosted the group at our team Airbnb for a traditional South African barbecue. The food was amazing, and our local community members led the charge in teaching us proper braai techniques – a lovely example of cultural exchange and community building through shared experience.
What excites me most is the potential to weave South Africa more tightly into the international market through shared experiences – creating environments where building and co-creation happen across borders, and fostering deeper connections that benefit everyone involved. That's the kind of meaningful integration that can truly amplify South Africa's impact on the global stage." - Janine Leger, Edge City Co-Founder

What We Learned
After spending deep, focused time in this ecosystem, three critical insights have shaped our understanding of South Africa's unique innovation landscape:
1. Practical Technology Applications: We witnessed how technologies like blockchain and AI are addressing fundamental needs in uniquely African contexts – from Bitcoin providing financial inclusion in townships to AI helping overcome educational resource gaps. These applications focus on real utility rather than speculation.
2. Leapfrogging Traditional Systems: South African entrepreneurs are creating systems that jump directly to contemporary solutions, bypassing outdated intermediate steps entirely. At Apex High School, students use self-guided digital learning rather than traditional classroom structures. Bitcoin Ekasi brings digital financial services to communities that never had robust banking. Fibertime delivers internet directly to townships without the need for landline infrastructure. These innovators aren't upgrading legacy systems, they're building entirely new approaches that address fundamental challenges more effectively.
3. Unique Ecosystem Advantages: South Africa offers an extraordinary combination of established infrastructure, vibrant innovation communities, and natural beauty that creates a powerful foundation for human flourishing. The region around Cape Town and Stellenbosch particularly stands out, with walkable communities nestled between mountains and sea. The incredible biodiversity around Table Mountain and the dramatic coastal landscapes are not just scenic backdrops, but fundamental environmental assets that support quality of life, creativity, and wellbeing in ways that purely urban settings cannot match.
Beyond our practical observations, there was something deeper that defined our experience – a spirit of determined optimism that deserves special recognition.
The Spirit of South African Innovation: Resilience & Vision
If there's one theme that defined our expedition and left an impression on our community, it was the extraordinary resilience and forward-looking vision we encountered throughout South Africa.
South Africa continues to grapple with the legacy of apartheid, which created deep structural inequalities in access to education, economic opportunity, and resources. Today's innovators face additional contemporary challenges including frequent power outages, high unemployment rates (especially among youth), limited access to venture capital, and significant wealth disparities that rank as the highest in the world.
Yet in this context, we witnessed a determined optimism and commitment to building better futures that defies conventional narratives. At Bitcoin Ekasi, the founder's words resonated: "I never plan to leave this township. People shouldn’t have to leave. Our community should improve right here." The team at Fibertime isn't just installing internet in Kayamandi township, they're creating the foundation for educational and economic transformation in a community that has long been overlooked. Apex High School demonstrates not just technological cleverness, but a refusal to accept that quality education is impossible in resource-constrained environments.
This "build where you are" mentality represents a lesson for innovators everywhere. Rather than seeking perfect conditions or accepting narratives of inevitable decline, South African builders are demonstrating how vision, determination, and community can transform even the most challenging circumstances.
As we consider South Africa for a future Edge City popup village, it's this spirit of resilience and optimism that makes the location so compelling. Beyond the infrastructure, beyond the natural beauty, it's the people and their commitment to creating better futures that truly sets this ecosystem apart.
"It's been deeply meaningful to come back to South Africa with a purpose. While I left initially believing opportunities lay abroad, it's remarkable to see the growing innovation ecosystem here now. I truly believe South Africa, especially the Western Cape, is poised to leapfrog many of its challenges through tech, and we are committed to continue supporting the growth of this talent and innovation hub. I’m more excited than ever to make an impact on the continent that raised me, and am looking forward to returning with a larger Edge City initiative in 2026. – Telamon Ardavanis, Edge City Team
